how I talk
February 11, 2011 Teri just posted an accent Vlog [video blog] the other day, and I thought it was super cute. I guess a lot of bloggers have done this recently. Such a fun idea. I’ve done a few other video posts that you can see here + here. :)
I sort of failed at the question part of the game, haha. I couldn’t remember how I say certain things!
Here is the list so you can follow along. I’ve actually changed the way I say quite a few words since college and now I think the old way I used to say things is really funny!
Here goes!
Aunt, Route, Wash, Oil, Theater, Iron, Salmon, Caramel, Fire, Water, Sure, Data, Ruin, Crayon, Toilet, New Orleans, Pecan, Both, Again, Probably, Spitting image, Alabama, Lawyer, Coupon, Mayonnaise, Syrup, Pajamas, Caught
Added on: Pillow, Toothpick, Milk, Eggs
Questions:
- What is it called when you throw toilet paper on a house? TP’ing
- What is the bug that when you touch it, it curls into a ball? I don’t know!
- What is the bubbly carbonated drink called? Soda, but I used to say POP!
- What do you call gym shoes? I totally say Tennis Shoes, but forgot to answer this in the video. Sneakers is a really weird word. Although when I say it, I say Tennuhshoes, like it’s one word. Calling all workout type shoes, tennis shoes really make no sense at all!
- What do you say to address a group of people? Hey guys!
- What do you call the kind of spider that has an oval-shaped body and extremely long legs? Daddy long legs
- What do you call the wheeled contraption in which you carry groceries at the supermarket? grocery cart!
- What do you call it when rain falls while the sun is shining? LOL…I had to google this!!! Sun Shower!
- What is the thing you change the TV channel with? remote! I think a lot of my family calls it a “clicker.” haha ;)
Happy Friday!!
Ashley

Man, now I want to make a video...:)
you have a Midwestern accent!
Happy Friday to you, too =]
I thought pillow and milk should have been added on when I did it too!
OMG it's totally sherbet -- there is no extra r!!! Soooo many people add that r and it drives me nuts -- lol just had to add this comment since I watched the second little video!
Ah, you are totally cute with your Cleveland accent! Do you pronounce the "H" in human, etc? I had a professor in college that was from Ohio and he didn't which I thought was so odd. Then again, I'm sure my southern accent is odd to most people too!
I don't think you have an accent, actually! I'm from northern New Jersey, and I talk the same way as you :)
Wow you and Teri both sound American! :-D
You do sound somewhat different though, but much less different than the changes I am used to from the UK and Norway.
These videos are so much fun!
I totally knew you had a Midwestern accent before I heard that you were from Cleveland. Not sure how I didn't know that already, but I did not. This also makes me want to do this video. :)
Hehe, you're so cute- I saw Kath's video like this, too! If I did one, you'd probably laugh at my CA girl accent :)
HahhHAHAHAHAHHAHAH my BFF in California says "melk" and "ayeggs!" Toooo funny to hear that out of someone else's mouth! And I'm totally cracking up about sherbET... you're so right about no second R, but I totally say sherbERT.
You have one of the more pronounced accents out of everyone I've heard who's done this. :)
Love the word additions!!
Aw, so cute! I loved hearing you speak! I say most things pretty much the same as you.... I just made a video as well and am gonna post it on my *new* blog (it's a weight lifting blog!). I've referenced you in the video so please come check it out! Also, I have a name for potato bug ;)
Ha! I love it! You are too cute! First, it's cray-on! Not crown:)
And that bug-ROLLEY POLLEY! Good vid!
Aaaaaahhh I MISS YOU! Felt like you were right here with me for a minute there. Not long enough! Funny enough, I feel like the word that you have the strongest accent on is "accent!" You say aaaaccent. :)
That was really cute. I don't think you have much of an accent. I'm from Texas, so I know I do, but I think yours is pretty neutral--not too southern or northern. I call the bug rolly pollies. I've never heard it called a potato bug either. Oh and this is so awful I'm not even sure I should say it, but in the south when it rains and the sun is shining, they say "the devil is beating his wife." I have no idea why and it always made me cringe, but that's just what "they" say.
[...] for a blog before, so this is big for me, haha. However, after seeing a bunch of my favourite bloggers participating in the “accent vlog” I wanted to join in on the [...]
I say sure-bit too. My grandpa said it like that, so I guess I got him from him. It shows character!
:) very cool! i posted mine up not too long ago. i have a pretty generic california accent, except for a few words that i might be the only person mispronouncing. :P
I have definitely never heard that phrase!!! Thanks for clearing it up!
BAhahaa...literally LOL'd at this!!! I know I say my A's weird...even when I say my name it's "Aaaaashley" and if you can believe, it's improved!
Fun!! I'll definitely have to check it out!!!
HAhahaa...that's funny!!! I always feel like I talk neutral..but apparently not!
HAha, that's funny!!
woop woop!!
I definitely say "H-uman" LOL.
Did it sound like I said crown?? I don't say cray-on...but more like word "ran" with a "c" in front of it and maybe with a little "y" action...."crayn"
You are super cute - I loved this video. Not how I pictured you to sound, but I don't think you have an accent!
This was super cool - it's so funny to see people talk in real time when I'm so used to just reading!
I know we're supposed to call them -veebrims- (I was corrected in REI) but I want to call them VIbrims! Long I... It just sounds cooler...
I definitely say "sherbeRt" and didn't even realize it didn't have a second R until just now...
Oh and if I did a accent vlog I would add "familiar" to the list. It drives me insane when people say "fermiliar"
I love putting voices to a blog! It doesn't sound like you have much of an accent.
I call potato bugs rolly pollys. I also made the mistake of calling my five fingers viiiiibrAAAms and then viiiibrUUUms but now I definitely call them vee-brums.
I'm from Florida and I say milk "melk" and pink "peenk" for some reason... my short i sound is inconsistent lol. As someone from the south of the country, you definitely have an accent to me! And I really hope this doesn't sound creepy, but has anyone ever told you that your voice is peaceful?
You seriously have the friendliest nicest voice ever...already knew that but remembered it again when I watched this :)
Happy Weekend Girl!
ha! i already knew how you talked but this is so cute :)
A very cute video :)
I definitely think that your vowels sound long, or a little Canadian- maybe that is just a midwestern thing. When you said 'accent' the a had a bit of an upward twang! (I study language so I pick up on pronunciation :P). I live in Wyoming, so I have no idea what I sound like!
Oh! And we always called the potato bug a "roly poly bug."
I say grocery cart, shopping cart or just cart. But, when I lived in Fl, a lot of people said "buggy". A lot of people think it is strange that I say "fixin". Like "I'm fixin to go to the store".
Yeaahhh that's kind of what I thought too!! Hehe this is so fun :) I love your voice it's so soothing~~I perceive your O's to be a liiiilll bit more rounded?
I love this! You are so cute and I miss your cute voice! you totally have a midwestern accent; I still remember the first time we talked and I noticed it instantly!
And thanks for the mayonnaise apology. I still love you. And I love your extra words - I think those words are even better than the list. I still say ehggs like Aggs. :)
P.S. I say sherbet the same way as you!
I'm from the midwest and I'm pretty sure I have an awful nasaly accent. One thing I do notice is that the region where I lives stressed vowels. Like Kathy becomes Kaaathy, etc. I definitely say aunt like you do and and not the other way (I'm never sure which is correct). I also say sherbet without the 'r', though my sister and I have had the same discussion (she says is sherbeRt). I looked it up and apparently you can say it both ways, which is just confusing. Plus, sherbert just sounds weird. One word I've recenctly come across that I think I say weird is "almond". I pronounce the L in it but according to the dictionary you aren't supposed to. I'm been trying to say it without but it takes a conscious effort. :P Sorry about my long comment. What a fun post. :)
That was awesome! I could totally tell that you were from the Midwest because I am too (Dayton, OH ;-) We said the words pretty much all the same, except I do same SherbeRt (don't know why lol) Also, rollie-polly (never called it a "potato bug")!
I definitely hear a bit of a midwestern accent. Not that much in the actual list of words, but just when you talk. People say that I sound nasal too. (Im from Maryland)
I had my husband do this and he said Granddaddy Long legs. I'd never heard of anyone saying anything but daddy long legs either.
you have an accent close to mine i think. and i live in ny.
someone should add the word "february" to that list.
Clicker reminds me of people calling a razor a "shaver"... I hate that :P
If it's electric I call it a shaver...but what I use in the shower is a razor. ;)
Totally!! My mom said that too...I might have to do a "how I talk round 2"
Granddaddy?? lol
