And it didn’t disappoint!  The slight crunchy/chewiness from chopped oat groats + buckwheat gives this bowl amazing texture.  The egg amps up the volume and makes the creamiest bowl of oats, you could ever imagine.

New House Oats

  • 1/4c Scottish oats [ground from whole oat groats]
  • 1T buckwheat groats
  • 3/4c water
  • 3/4c almond milk
  • 1t cinnamon
  • 1/2 banana, thinly sliced
  • 1t vanilla
  • 1 large egg

toppings

  1. Whisk together oats, buckwheat, water, almond milk, cinnamon and banana in a pot over medium heat, and bring to a boil.
  2. Reduce heat to a a low boil and whisk every minute or so.  Cook time will be about 10-15min.
  3. In the last 2-3min, stir in vanilla and whisk in the whole egg until well combined.
  4. Let sit 2min, whisk, then pour into bowl.

Goodnight!

Ashley

Now that I can eat oats, I really need to make oatmeal... I haven't had it in years. This looks AMAZING...

Mazel tov!
Those counters are the perfect backdrop for photos... was that intentional? Wait, scratch that. Of COURSE it was intentional :)

Now that's how you celebrate a new house (and kitchen)! It looks amazing!

As always, gorgeous photography.

Yay!! It's been FOREVER since I've had oats so I just whipped up a bowl of steel cut with blueberries and coconut! Mmmm! I'll have to try the buckwheat groats in my next bowl...I love the chewy texture of them in the buckwheat bakes!

P.S. LOVE that pic of the flame on your new stove!

I had oats this morning and I had planned on adding an egg but totally forgot :(

April 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterHolly @ The Runny Egg

yey for your first bowl of "new house oats" that's super exciting! :)

That range stove is beautiful, Ash! I caught up on all your weekend house-fixing-up posts, whew you two have been BUSY! :)

Dude, almost all of my LoveGrown samples are totally gone, save some of the cocoa. Eeps. I think I have a problem? (It's been less than a week...) So good!

That looks delicious! I never have my oatmeal with honey, I'll have to try it sometime. You must be thrilled that your kitchen is up and running - the gas stovetop is gorgeous!

April 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterDiana

I like the idea of the egg, I'll have to try it. Hope you're getting all settled in!

I put my very first pot of Scottish Oats on the stove today and though of you! (Actually, if I'm being honest, it's simmering away on the back burner right now, unattended. Yeah, yeah, kitchen safety and all that.) Congratulations on the range - everything looks like it's coming along really well! :)

A milestone moment in any home.

April 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterGena

Okay, I'm back to sing the praises of Scottish oats - Oh. My. God. I kept it pretty simple - oats, almond milk, and chia seeds, topped with coconut butter and granola - and it was possibly the creamiest, fluffiest, loveliest breakfast I've ever consumed. When I go back to eating eggs (I've gone vegan for Lent... eeep), I'm going to have to try that, because it seems impossible that anything could make that bowl of oats any better than it was. :P

Yum yum peanut butter banana oats!

April 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterCassie

The oats look so yummy! Sometimes I add an egg white to my oats, but I've never added the whole egg. I definitely need to try it though if it produces super creamy oats!!

The STEAM in the photos is awesome!!

April 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterChelsea

The first of many bowls of oats to come! Yay! Sounds like you're getting the ole appetite back as well :)

I spy Whole Foods peanut butter and I like it :) The oatmeal looks yummers and I completely agree about the lil' something special that egg adds to the mix.

The kitchen looks great and I love the new counters. This morning I made my first buckwheat bake topped with honey cashew butter. Thanks for the recipes.

April 18, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterdebbie

I really need to get on the "putting-an- egg- into- your- oatmeal" train.... I have yet to try it! I love eggs, so why not? I'm sure it makes it super fluffy, yummy, and protein- rich! Will SO be trying this out soon :)
YAY for stove oatmeal!

April 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterEmilia

The kitchen looks amazing, loving the contrast between the counters and cabinets! I've had a bag of scottish oats for awhile now not knowing what to do with them! Thanks for sharing, looks delish!

April 18, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKristy

The oatmeal looks AMAZEBALLS! Congrats on the new inaugural bowl of oats.

Don't know what to do with them??? Oh my gosh, cook them up on the stove!! They have the BEST texture! I like using a lot of liquid...much more than it calls for. I usually use about 1/3c Scottish oats and cook it with 3/4c water + 3/4c milk of choice. I bring it to a boil and then simmer for about 10-12 minutes, whisking every few minutes. Typically, I also whisk in thinly sliced banana, cinnamon and vanilla. My favorite!

April 19, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAshley

Yes you do! If you've ever done the egg-white, it's even better!
