chocolate cherry slurp sensation

This smoothie [in a bowl!!] needed it’s own post!  It was just that delicious!

I know there are a lot of recipes for chocolate-cherry smoothies out there, so maybe you already have a favorite.  I whipped this up in such a hurry, I wasn’t expecting anything great.  My smoothies are hit or miss.  They’re always good enough to drink but it’s not too often that I make a WOW smoothie.

I used a light bounce placed to the left, in the rest of the photos, with the light coming from the right.  You can definitely tell a difference from the above photos!

Where was I?

Oh yes, this chocolate cherry cake batter like smoothie!  I swear it tasted like cake batter.  Cold, cake batter.

(4 of 31)

Chocolate Cherry Cake Batter Smoothie [serves 1]

  • 1c frozen cherries
  • 1/2 frozen banana
  • ~1c unsweetened almond milk
  • 1T chia seeds
  • 3T uncooked rolled oats
  • 1.5T unsweetened cocoa powder
  1. Blend until smooth!  Add more liquid as needed to reach desired consistency.

Dust the top with a little cocoa powder and whatever toppings you want.  So much more fun to top + eat with a spoon!

Off to the local paint store, where they know me by name, and then to the house!

Yum, I need to get some cocoa powder for this very reason.

Chocolate cherry cake batter? I'm sold! I never thought of putting oats into a smoothie. I'll have to give it a try this week.

I can't believe i've never picked up frozen cherries! I freeze my own during the summer but they never last never long :(

Looks delicious and your pictures rock like always too.

Have fun getting your painting on!

wow...the COLOR on that alone is so beautiful and bright...I would love to have that for breakfast! I love how a little bit of oats (I originally by accident typed leetle, I guess I'm channeling some sort of accent) can thicken up a smoothie. Gorgeous and delicious!

March 22, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterclaire

I love cherries but for some reason any choc/cherry smoothie I make just tastes funny? Not sure why. Yours looks delicious!

Love the color of the smoothie! Good luck painting!

I'm allergic to cherries! :( But I'm sure I could substitute some other berries. Like raspebrries, YUM!

Oooh, just decided what I'm having for dinner! I've been sick so a smoothie sounds awesome and I just picked up some frozen cherries yesterday.

We just bought our first house so I'm loving the renovation posts!

Oh my word, this looks SO GOOD. I can't ever find frozen cherries, so weird! Awesome job with this one!

must... buy....cherries!

I never see them at Whole Foods, but I can find a huge bag sometimes at Costco. They're organic too!

March 22, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAshley

Strawberries + chocolate would be delicious!

March 22, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAshley

March 22, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAshley

March 22, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterFallon

I want that bowl right now!!! Love the color that the cherries give the dish :) When I re-did my house a few years ago the local paint guys knew me my name too ;) I think they thought I was crazy because I always had questions and covered in paint, LOL

March 22, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterPure2raw Twins

WOW!! I want some...

March 22, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterKristin @ FoodFash

Hahaha...yeah, pretty sure they think I only have 1 shirt + that I don't shower...

March 22, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAshley

I've seen a lot of people put their smoothies in a bowl. I have to give it a try. I'm not sure if I'll like it [there's something super satisfying to slurping it from a cup] but I'll try anything once!

I think cherries taste like chocolate! I made a green drink like this with added spinach. BUT this sounds amazing!!

March 22, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAri@ ThE DiVa DiSh

YUM! I love chocolate (berry) smoothies. The color of yours is beautiful :)

March 22, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMonique

You had me at cake batter. Yum! It's so hard to find frozen cherries here, though :( I'll be on the search so I can make this!!

xo

That smoothie looks incredible! And no added sugar, so I can indulge as much as I want :) Yayy thanks for the awesome recipe!

I can't find frozen cherries anywhere around here...there is some conspiracy going on! lol. We need to make it happen. pitting and freezing fresh ones is a pain in the butt (I did it all last summer).

March 23, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAngela (Oh She Glows)

Do you guys have Costco? THat's where I get them, but even that is hit or miss!! Pitting is no fun!

March 23, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAshley

Strawberries would also be delicious!

March 23, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAshley

Yummy! I had to go buy some frozen cherries after seeing all your recipes using them. I made this today for me and the hubby and we loved it. Great simple and delicious!

PS> where can I buy raw buckwheat? i can't find it anywhere around where I live and desperately want to make a buckwheat bake!

So glad you liked the smoothie!! I get it at a small store called Natural Grocers. They also have it in small boxes at Whole Foods and possibly in the bulk section, but ours only has the roasted Kasha version. A reader told me she orders it online, on amazon. If you can't find it and don't want to order, you can sub in oat flour [just grind oat groats or steel cut oats]. Hope this helps!

March 23, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAshley

I can't find them either-- arg! just looked at my costco yesterday, as well as WF and such. Where are you frozen cherries? If only you could order them....

April 20, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterEmilia

This looks heavenly! I might have to make this after my bike ride tomorrow morning. I could make it into a meal. Lately lunches that include eggs and tuna are just not doing it. So a heavy duty smoothie would be fabulous. Thanks for sharing! :)
